CDI that speaks the language of quality and reimbursement

Documentation drives more than financial impact. It shapes quality, mortality and PSI results too. We connect the dots and can manage any scope of your CDI program.

CDI is judged on more than CC/MCC capture.

CDI leaders are asked to improve quality measures, engage physicians, keep query practices consistent and prove the program's value, often with the same size team. We understand and can support quality methodologies that impact mortality O/E ratios, PSI reporting, and other quality measures, not just reimbursement.

CDI across Inpatient and Outpatient

  • Inpatient concurrent review that paints the full picture: severity, risk of mortality, CC/MCC capture, query practice, mortality and PSI review
  • Outpatient CDI: HCC capture, ED medical necessity and clinic E/M leveling, observation and ambulatory surgery
  • Second-level review and clinical validation
  • Methodology expertise: CMS, Vizient, Elixhauser and other frameworks
  • Ambient AI documentation validation: what it produces, and how it affects queries and workflow
  • Targeted education and remediation

How we help

We provide credentialed CDI specialists and interim leaders who work alongside your team - for a vacancy, a leave, a backlog, a volume spike or a leadership gap, for as long as you need them.

We can manage your full CDI program — leadership, coverage, quality oversight and reporting or take on a defined piece of it.

An independent assessment looks at severity capture, query practice, quality outcomes, workflow and staffing, and shows where to focus first.

An independent audit checks a sample of reviews and queries for accuracy to identify whether severity and risk are documented and coded the way the record supports.

Ongoing physician, resident and CDI specialist education, including onboarding for new clinicians, bootcamps or remediation.

How Sharp HealthCare built a stronger CDI program

Sharp HealthCare wanted a more complete, data-driven CDI program. Working with UASI, they:

  • Grew DRG payer review coverage from about 60% to more than 90%
  • Completed approximately 90% of payer reviews within 48 hours
  • Increased annual CDI query impact from $11 million to $19 million, up more than 70%

The program also contributed to stronger quality performance by more fully capturing patient acuity.

  • $38,000 average monthly impact per UASI CDI consultant, with a 161% net ROI
  • $306 average revenue increase per record from second-level review
  • $282 average potential impact per record reviewed in CDI audits

FAQs

  • Can you help us with just one open position or manage our entire program?

Yes. Not every need requires a managed-services arrangement. We can provide targeted support for a vacancy, leave, backlog, volume increase or other temporary capacity need.

  • Does your CDI team focus on quality or reimbursement?

First and foremost, we focus on accuracy. Our job is to make sure the record reflects the patient's clinical condition and the care provided.  When that supports higher severity or reimbursement, the documentation should show it.  When it doesn't, we'll say so.  That's what keeps a program compliant and earns physician trust.

  • Is clinical documentation integrity the same as clinical documentation improvement?

Yes. They’re two names for the same discipline. "Clinical documentation improvement” is the original term, and many hospitals still use it. “Clinical documentation integrity” is more common now because CDI is judged on more than CC/MCC capture. The record has to accurately reflect how sick the patient was, which affects quality measures, PSI and mortality results, risk adjustment and compliance, as well as reimbursement. Our CDI specialists work with both goals in mind, whatever your program is called.

  • How do we quantify and communicate the financial value of CDI to Finance?

Establish an accurate baseline - this is key to showing true impact. Ensure program data collection is consistent and program changes made by CDI are captured appropriately through a reconciliation review. On the financial side, that means query impact as well as coding collaboration efforts: the query agreement rate, the DRG shifts that follow, and whether the codes assigned reflect the care given. From a quality perspective, did queries support capture of severity of illness and risk of mortality? Have readmission and PSI-related concerns decreased, and have your O/E results improved? Report the results against what the program costs, on a regular schedule, in terms finance uses. We help clients construct and maintain those measures so reported value is clear before the budget and ROI conversation happens.
